Target audience results - Miss Miller

Questionnaire

Research was carried out by my group to find out varied views of the public of their taste in music genre, more specifically their views of the indie genre. Their views and opinions will give us constructive feedback in order to produce the music video sufficiently. 40 people were asked these questions which is a large amount of the public and would therefore give us a wide variety of answers and different views/feedback on what the people think.
This research was carried out to find out what certain concepts appeal to our target audience, so I can ensure that they will enjoy the music video that I will create. The research was carried out to gain more ideas of what to include in the music video, to decide if the artist we are doing will appeal to our target market and what elements of an Indie music video attract and entertain our target audience. The reason why we had forty people participate in this questionnaire was in order to allow the data to be more representative and valid. Collecting information from a wider audience is more likely to produce quantitative and representative results. These results will help me to plan what content is going to be shown in the music video. Also, when it comes down to creating a storyboard I would have gained more ideas, making the storyboard task easier.

This questionnaire has the questions that were asked to the audience. Within this questionnaire ten questions were asked, three closed questions and seven open questions.

Vox pox

The vox pops above are used to gain qualitative data, above there are five different people all of different ages. This also helps me to see their different views and this gives them the opportunity to express their views on indie music and music videos in more detail which can allow me to use this data.

Pie Charts

This question on the pie chart determines the gender of the public. From the above pie chart it is evident that more women than men were asked in the questionnaire. This is possibly because of the fact that women are more likely to listen to indie music and therefore I have chosen to aim and make my target audience women for my music video as they are most likely to watch music videos involving Lana Del Rey as she is a female artist who's music consists mostly of love songs which appeals more to females. The ratio between the two sexes is not too different at 32% male 68% female. This will allow me to know what gender we will target our music video at, which will be males due to the data. But I will make sure that the music video is suitable for both sexes and is universal for both genders to enjoy. This question has been useful as it has helped us decide on the gender of our audience. Which will allow us to make the music video more conventional to males. Which will allow them to be more entertained by the music video.

The question and this pie chart shows the varied age ranges that we investigated into and asked to conclude the overall age group interest in our chosen artist. The largest of the sections is the 17-22 which wasn't far off our other age variation of 11-16 years old both of which are ages our group will be aiming to target our music video at. This can help our group to see what the main aims of this specific age group would want in an Indie music video and allow us to focus more on their interests rather than that of an older target audience. I will intend on using this pie chart to be able to aim the music video at the audience between the ages of 11-16 and 17-22. This has allowed us to make sure that our results are valid and catered to our target audience. This question was done to inform me if the majority of the individuals questioned were the target audience age of a typical indie music video. With this question it will also allow us to  be confident in including alcohol references, violent imagery and forms of abuse to portray our chosen song in a deeper manner. So we now know that our target audience are suitable for this content.

This question and pie chart above shows the response  and opinion on the audience of whether or not they like our chosen artist. This will help our group to decide whether the audience will like the song and music video that will be produced and whether they will take interest in watching it. From the pie chart above it shows that over half of the responses from the public like Lana Del Rey, this will help us to follow the conventions of Lana Del Rey and to make sure the music video follows the same style as Lana Del Rey's music videos and music which will determine whether the majority of the audience will like it. A large section of people opted for 'maybe' which means they may not like everything about Lana Del Rey's style or conventions which means our group can take this into consideration and adapt the style in some ways to appeal to the interest of a wider range of audience. This allowed me to find out if Lana Del Rey is admired by many and if it would be worth while for us to do her song. However, we found out that she has a large fan base. Due to her popularity it would prove successful to make a music video for Lana's song 'Blue Jeans'. This has also given me a sign of not to subvert what Lana Del Rey usually gives to her audience. As her fans blatantly like what she is doing. So we should ensure that our music video is something which can be easily connected with Lana Del Rey's previous music videos and current artistry.

This pie chart and question gives me the result of the public on what genres they enjoy and whether or not they like the indie or house music genres. This overall pie chart shows that most people like the house genre which ties in with our groups music video as we are using a remix. Many people also said the indie-genre due to well known artists in the UK such as Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran making the genre more popularised. A lot of the audience like indie music which gives me confidence that they will like the indie music video that I am creating which is mixed with the even more popular genre of house/dance.

This part chart shows the response and opinion of whether or not the public like remixed songs of varied genres. I specified my question in my Vox Pox to the indie genre to get the view of remixes of our chosen genre. As you can see the pie chart shows the majority of people said yes they think the indie genre can be remixed which reassures our group that we can carry out the idea of mixing the indie genre with the dance genre in order to make it more upbeat. The second largest portion of people opted for 'other' which shows they are apprehensive but wouldn't dismiss the idea. The pie chart gives us an overall positive response which will enable our group to carry out the conventions of both genres to combine.

This pie chart shows the response of the audience on the style they most like to see included within a music video. This enables our group to gain feedback on what style/s to use when producing our music video based on what our target audience prefers. The pie chart shows that the majority of the audience would like to see a Narrative/concept based music video which allows our group to continue our narrative based idea of a love story within our music video. The amount of people who said they like to see performance was almost equal to those who said a mixture of the styles which means our group can take this data and take into consideration of mixing some aspects of performance with our narrative based concept.

This pie chart question ties in with the previous question as it follows our groups narrative idea on a love story. The results on this pie chart enabled us to gain an insight into the views of the audience on whether or not they like to see a love story narrative in a music video and whether or not we should go through with our idea. The majority of people said they would like to see a love story which assures our group that it would appeal to most of our target audience.
This pie chart gives our group the different opinions of the audience on what to include within out music video based on what they like. The vast majority of people said they like to see a narrative of the artists life followed by many people saying a love story. I intend to carry out a love story within our music video in order to appeal to our target audience. Few people said a performance of the song which is good feedback with not including that style within our groups music video.

This pie chart gives us negative feedback from the audience on their opinions on what they wouldn't want to see included in a music video. This gives our group an understanding in what not to include that wouldn't appeal to our target audience. A vast majority of people said they wouldn't want to see a confusing story that is difficult to follow; our group can take this feedback and make sure our storyline is clear and easy to follow and understand in order to attract a wider range of our target audience. Many people also said they don't like to see too many explicit actions which our group can take into consideration and make sure we limit the amount of explicity included within our music video.

This pie charts results gives our group the response on what characters our target audience like to see in a music video. Our results showed that the majority of people said they like to see male and female characters together which can imply a love story or some sort of relationship between the two sexes which our group intend to carry out with our narrative based style on a love story.

The subculture theory that I believe would be most closely applied to my group and I is Grant McCracken where the post modern world is full of diversity, dynamism and creativity. McCracken states that if we look at the array of values, and ideologies then we can't say all sub cultures come from one culture.

For example the genre rock and heavy metal cannot come from the genre pop and indie genre because the style of music is completely different and may not be totally the same as the other genres as each have their own styles.

  1. You have provided a basic analysis of your results, explaining what the results show, but not going into enough detail on what you will include within your video as a result.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you explain what you will include (more specifically) within your music video because of your results and why
    2) Elaborate on your paragraph on subculture theory by explaining how your results demonstrate it as well as how you will include it within your music video
    3) Include a conclusion about how and why this was beneficial to your group work and what it allowed you to gain
    4) Elaborate on why you made vox pops of your questionnaire and the benefits of them
